The Challenge
With a loyal following in the dog food market, Butternut Box wanted to become the meal of choice for cats, but early research revealed just how different the creatures, and their owners, were. Simply extending the brand into cats risked missing the mark. Cat owners had fundamentally different needs, behaviours and emotional dynamics. Butternut needed a cat-first proposition.
The approach taken
We were brought in to help Butternut Box understand whether there was space for a new cat food brand and, if so, what the winning customer proposition should be. As well as reviewing data and developing early hypotheses, we talked to cat owners. We got to know their cats and them, what was their true challenge? And we looked for the spaces where Butternut could stand apart in the cat food market.
The insight uncovered
Cat owners love their pets deeply, often treating them like children and accepting behaviours that would be classed as ‘problems’ in dogs. Their cats are adored, indulged, and firmly in charge, which makes feeding particularly stressful and frustrating when cats reject food unpredictably. Owners felt existing brands didn’t ‘get’ cats’ quirks – their fussiness and need for variety. They craved a brand that understood their emotional relationship with cats, offered genuinely cat‑first nutrition, and made feeding reliable and joyful. Owners wanted food their cat will consistently love – fresh, varied meals that respect cats’ distinct needs.
The answer we developed
As cat owners felt cat needs were fundamentally different and saw Butternut as a ‘dog brand’, a new brand was needed. The recommended proposition centred on fresh, varied, highly palatable meals designed specifically for obligate carnivores, solving the core emotional and functional tension: “When my cat won’t eat, I feel stressed. I just want food they reliably love.” The value proposition became: Fresh cat food your cat will love, today and always. And was underpinned by variety-led menus, cat‑first formulation, and a frictionless experience.
The impact created
Butternut Box launched Marro, a standalone cat brand built on the proposition developed -fresh, varied, cat‑first meals that cats reliably love. Marro has rapidly accumulated ~2,000+ highly positive Trustpilot reviews, with owners reporting improved digestion, appetite, coat condition and overall vitality – key satisfaction markers amongst cat owners. Customer feedback praises both food quality and service experience.
